Language Finders helps local companies learn the basics of Sign Language
There are 8.7 million deaf or hard of hearing people in the UK, that is 1 in 7 of the total population. Deaf Awareness Week is a unique awareness campaign bringing together nearly 100 deaf charities and organisations under the umbrella of the UK Council on Deafness.
May 1st 2006 saw the start of National Deaf Awareness week, and Language Finders decided to help promote this by holding a free breakfast seminar at their conference facilities within The Deep Business Centre.
The seminar was brought together to help raise peoples awareness of working with the Deaf, and included a speech from Mark Ellis, from the Regional Language Network, a presentation from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and a short training course on learning the basics of Sign Language from one of Language Finders BSL Interpreters.
The morning was a great success, and many companies throughout Yorkshire attended. Although the seminar was sponsored by Language Finders, donations from those attended where given, and the money raised was given to Dave Thomason, from hearing dogs for the Deaf.
Language Finders provided the services of face-to-face interpreting, telephone interpreting and written translation. Another service that is provided, that is growing ever more popular is that of British Sign Language.
